goodreadance 2020 check-in: spreadsheet love, another unhaul, and my new star rating system9/14/2020 in case you missed it, it's that time of the year: time to clean yourself up bookish-wise. thank you to the lovely shealea at shut up, shealea for initiating this productive and organized mood!! hi all, i'm sorry i've been gone, but i've been going through the craziest time and trying to balance all my bookish endeavors on top of all of that has not been going as well for me as i thought it was going to be. i didn't have the time to post last week and haphazardly threw together a book haul video to try and make some content that i liked. but i'm starting to balance out my schedule (thanks, quarantine!) and my bookish habits are starting to fall back into place. books also serve to be a place of calm and happiness during all the other stressful things i have going on in life. in particular, i've really enjoyed participating in shealea's goodreadance challenge and cleaning up myself bookish-wise. i like to think that i'm quite the organized person in real life, but goodreadance has shown me how... chaotic i've been lately. a reminder of goals i set for the challenge earlier this month:
as you might know, i've been keeping a log recently of the books i read each month and the diversity of my reads overall, but i was inspired by shealea herself to create a log of all the books i own in order to reflect on my physical book collection and do some unhauling. i created a spreadsheet on google sheets in order to do this, organized into books i own physically and books that i own digitally (e- and audiobooks). spreadsheet organizing my books by author name, title, rating and comments. there is color-coding. mine isn't nearly as advanced as some that are out there, but what i have so far really works for me. as a quick explanation, i have separated out information by the author's first and last name, the title of the work, my star-rating, and a note if necessary. i don't have much information to record for reviews and such, so that's all i need for now. additionally, i have a very shoddy color-coding system because, as i mentioned, i'm trying to read more diverse books (aka books not by white cishet authors). as you can see, i've been doing a lot better with that recently!
i also chose to unhaul a small handful of books that are currently sitting in a separate pile for when i'm out of quarantine. the books i'm unhauling are regency buck by georgette heyer, carry on by rainbow rowell, texts from bennett by mac lethal (lol), the separation by katie kitamura, and the raven boys by maggie stievfater. this unhaul trickled into my goodreads account, where i went through my 'to-read' list and made sure i actually want to read all the books there. fortunatley, my to-read list was already pretty minimal, so i didn't reduce it down too much, but i found there to be a lot of classics that i'm no longer interested in reading (especially after my tumultuous summer with russian literature) and books by white authors that i no longer have time for (bro, i gotta catch up on so many AOC series!!). so those are all gone. yay! the final thing i've done is create a solid rating system. before, i usually just went off of gut feelings, but that lead to me recently re-rating a lot of books after i settled on how i truly felt about them. i've made the decision to make my star-rating system based around my recommendations if someone were to ask. it goes as follows:
so, to say the least, goodreadance has gone well for me, and i'm so glad that i participated in it. i'm happy to be able to say that in one aspect of my life i'm organized and have myself together! are you participating in goodreadance? if so, how is it going for you? feel free to leave a comment below or reach out to me on instagram or twitter if you'd like to chat more! otherwise, have a wonderful week, and hopefully i'll be back again next week.

goodreadance has been so much fun - i spent a good day just making spreadsheets and color coding everything. the final result is so satisfying to watch 😂 i still need to go through my goodreads and that's kind of the intimidating part but i'm still excited! :)

I really want to participate but the timing wasn't right at that time :( Now that I'm free-er, I already made plans to join haha. I try making a spreadsheets on all the books I owned but then I got to lazy 🤡 Hopefully the challenge will make me feel more motivated to stick to my goals!
